Ecological Operation Test of Stratified Water Withdrawal for Cascade Hydropower Plants on Stem Stream of the Yangtze River in 2025 Officially Launched!
Release time:2025-01-10

Recently, with?the first layer of stop log gates of?Wudongde and Baihetan HPPs?being?dropped ??successively, it?marks?the official and?comprehensive launch of the ecological operation test of stratified water withdrawal for cascade hydropower plants on the stem stream of?the Yangtze River in 2025.

As an?important?part of?ecological dispatching?practice?of cascade reservoirs?actively carried out by?the?China Three Gorges?Group, the ecological operation test of stratified water withdrawal involves blocking the discharge of low-temperature river water from the lower layer of the reservoir through dropped stop log gates, while allowing the upper-layer high-temperature river water to be exposed to sunlight to flow downstream, thus creating a favorable water temperature environment for fish reproduction.

During the ecological operation test, 4 layers of stop log gates will be dropped in 12 units of?the?Wudongde HPP, 2 layers of stop log gates will be dropped in 16 units of?the?Baihetan HPP, and 1 layer of stop log gate will be dropped in 9 units (left bank) of?the?Xiluodu HPP. According to the preliminary plan, those layers of stop log gates are expected to be fully dropped before?March 1, 2025.

In the future, CYPC will comprehensively consider the multi-party needs for water replenishment, navigation,?and energy supply guarantee during the draw-down?period of cascade reservoirs, seek support from competent dispatching authority, formulate scientific test plans, and orderly advance various ecological operation tests?orderly. While leveraging the ecological benefits of cascade reservoirs, CYPC will continue to promote the protection and restoration of water ecological environment in the basin, so as to build a solid ecological barrier for the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
